Watercolor?

Actually it’s all gouache and india ink. Though I’m still struggling with finding the perfect ink. I’m using Higgin’s Black Magic and Speedball Super Black but neither is, well, very black. Anyone have any better suggestions?

I just found your comic through Fleen. It’s really lovely. It very much stands out from most of what’s out there in web comics. I use ink in my comic all the time (Speedbal Super Black, like you) and I have to up the contrast in Photoshop to get it BLACK. I used to use Higgens, but it changed formulas and was less black. Have you tried an acrylic black ink?

I, too, discovered your work via Fleen, eliza. Very nice rich mood and atmosphere, and the pacing is really working for me too. You’ve piqued my interest and I’ll be back on a regular basis to see what happens to our Lady. Bravo!

T* - Thanks! I’ve now spent the last 45 minutes reading your comic too. Awesome design! No, I haven’t tried an acrylic black but I’ll pick some up. I have this fantasy about being able to paint a page, scan it and not have to touch it at all with Photoshop.
Krishna- Wow, fantastic thank you!

Thank you right back! I’ve seen a lot of original comic pages and generally, the brushstrokes in the black ink are pretty much always visible. PS may be a necessary evil. Speedball makes a permanent black acrylic ink that leaves the fewest brushstrokes I’ve seen. It’s also a much more matte finish than the regular inks.

I think you’re probably right- it’s unavoidable. I’ve heard a lot of people reminisce about the Higgin’s ink that used to be amazing until they changed the formula. Oh well. :/ I will get myself some of this acrylic ink today!

Oh yes, this is excellent. Please continue to be an excellent person.

Also flew in from Fleen. I love the look and style, and if I may say so, your hair detail is GORGEOUS!
So if it’s a mystery, do we get a chance to solve it?

Grep- Haha thanks! I’ll try…
Liz- Thank you! Yeah definitely, if you can….

I find black gouache exquisite for solid flat blacks.
You’re work is beautiful! Cannot wait for the next episode!

Found you through Journalista today. Wow. Love the art, great use of negative space and contrasting blacks.

Carruthers- Hmmm… that’s a really good idea, especially since I usually lay down all the colors before the inks anyway. Thanks!
Derik- Thank you!
